The right rug size helps a room feel connected and comfortable. The living room is where most of our larger rugs end up, and in HDB flats, living areas come in many shapes.
A few simple guidelines can make choosing a rug size easier, whether you're furnishing a compact 3-room flat or a larger executive flat.
Here's our guide to what size rug to get for your HDB living room, including common layouts, sizes by flat type, round rugs and how to measure for a custom rug.
The Basic Rule for Living Room Rug Size
Having at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug helps connect the seating area.
This simple approach helps the rug look settled in the room. Leaving some floor visible around the edges, roughly 20 to 45 cm from the walls, can also help the space feel open. The rug is usually at least as wide as the sofa, and a little wider often looks more balanced.
Three Common Living Room Layouts
Most living rooms suit one of three rug layouts, depending on the size of the space.
Front legs on the rug. The sofa's front legs rest on the rug and the back legs sit on the floor. This works well in compact living rooms and is the most popular layout for HDB flats.
All legs on the rug. The whole seating group sits on the rug. This creates a generous, enclosed feel and suits larger living rooms.
Rug under the coffee table only. A smaller rug sits just under the coffee table. This can work in very tight spaces. The seating area may feel a little less connected with this layout.
Rug Sizes for 3-Room HDB Flats
In compact living areas, a rug under the coffee table and the sofa's front legs keeps things open.
Our standard MYRA area rug, at 170 x 240 cm, may be a good place to start for a two- or three-seater sofa.

Rug Sizes for 4-Room HDB Flats
With a little more room, a rug at least as wide as the sofa helps the seating area feel anchored.
In living rooms with an armchair or a chaise, a larger or custom-sized rug can bring all the pieces together.
Rug Sizes for 5-Room and Executive Flats
Larger living rooms can take a bigger rug, or two rugs to separate living and dining areas.
This is where a custom-size rug can be especially useful, since it can be sized to each zone.
Working Around the TV Console and Coffee Table
A comfortable walkway in front of the TV console keeps the area easy to move through.
In many HDB living rooms, the sofa faces a TV console, and the rug sits between the two. A gap of around 30 to 50 cm between the rug and the console usually works well. The coffee table ideally sits fully on the rug, with some rug visible on all sides.
Rugs for Open-Plan Living and Dining
Two rugs in similar tones can define each zone and keep an open-plan space cohesive.
For a dining rug, one guideline is to allow around 60 cm of rug beyond the table on each side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Using the same border colour for both rugs helps tie the space together.
Choosing a Round Rug Size
A round rug suits round coffee tables, reading corners and rooms that benefit from a softer shape.
Under a round coffee table, a rug that extends at least 30 cm beyond the table on all sides tends to look balanced. In a reading corner, a round rug large enough to hold the front legs of the armchair helps define the nook. Round rugs can also soften a room full of straight lines.
YUNA Jute Round Rug, available in 100, 180 and 240 cm diameters.
Our YUNA Jute Round Rug comes in three sizes. The 100 cm size suits a bedside or a small reading corner. The 180 cm size can anchor a cosy seating area around a round coffee table. The 240 cm size can sit under a round dining table of around 120 cm, leaving room for chairs to pull out.

Rug Sizes for Bedrooms, Hallways and Entrances
In bedrooms and hallways, leaving a little floor visible around the rug keeps the look neat.
In a bedroom, a rug that extends beyond the sides of the bed gives a soft landing underfoot. It can sit under the lower two-thirds of the bed, or run along one side.
In a hallway, a runner with a small strip of floor visible on each side tends to look intentional.

At the front door, a doormat that sits within the width of the doorway and clears the door swing tends to work best.

Custom Rug Sizes for Tricky Layouts
L-shaped rooms, pillars, bay windows and built-in carpentry can make standard sizes tricky.
Long, narrow hallways can be too. A made-to-measure sisal carpet or runner can fit these spaces more naturally.
Common Rug Sizing Mistakes
- A rug that's too small. The furniture ends up floating around it, and the room can feel disconnected.
- Blocking doors or cabinets. A rug that sits under a door swing can catch and bunch up.
- Ignoring walkways. Leaving clear paths around the rug helps the room flow.
- Measuring the room, not the zone. The rug usually covers the seating area, not the entire floor.
How to Measure for a Custom Sisal Carpet
Painter's tape on the floor is an easy way to see how a size feels before committing.
- With the furniture in place, outline the rug on the floor with painter's tape.
- Check that doors, cabinets and sliding windows can open freely.
- Measure the taped area in centimetres.
